For Matthew, writing this account of Jesus’ life for a primarily Jewish audience meant not only telling people who Jesus was, but rooting his identity in the bigger story of God’s love for his people over hundreds of years.

In the first four chapters, we’re left in no uncertain terms that Jesus is the Messiah, sent by God to save His people.
